The treatment of eating disorders requires a multi-dimensional approach. My patients have often
struggled for months to years in a painful and at times secret dilemma before finding the right treatment. A thorough
initial assessment is essential in developing an individualized treatment plan. Factors to be considered include:
- current patterns of eating and purging
- triggers to problem behaviors
- additional problems such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and interpersonal conflicts
Understanding my patients requires more than identifying problem behaviors. I emphasize the importance of
learning in the development, maintenance and ultimately, the unlearning of problem patterns. Social history, family
interactions and personality style are all addressed at the initial consultation and considered in treatment recommendations.
Treatment consists of a focus on "here and now issues" and is results-oriented. We will explore
behaviors, thoughts and feelings important to you and your recovery.
Many patients chose to address
significant longer-term issues frequently associated with eating disorders. They include
- low
self-esteem
- history of trauma
- identity concerns
- difficulties in relationships
I often consult with other involved professionals
to assure the best support for my patients. I refer to physicians, nutritionists and psychiatrists with specialized
training in the area of eating disorders. Community resources such as support groups and education groups are often
utilized as well.
